Media Literacy Modules

These modules support faculty who wish to integrate media literacy into their courses, regardless of discipline.

Why Media Literacy Matters

smartphone eyeglasses and newspapersAccording to the Stanford History Education Group, "young people’s ability to reason about the information on the Internet can be summed up in one word: bleak." The study found that students struggle to differentiate between accurate, fake, and sponsored content. The results were alarming, so much so that researchers warned that there could be dire consequences for democratic engagement.

As educators, we are uniquely positioned to address this deficit of skills. If our students are armed with the knowledge, tools, and techniques to evaluate news sources (regardless of medium), they will be better prepared to fight the onslaught of fake news and lead the way as active and prepared democratic citizens.
