Annotated Bibliography: About the Assignment

For this assignment, you will

  • search the scientific literature for 5 primary, peer-reviewed scientific papers that relate to your experiment in some way
  • put these 5 citations in APA format  and write a short 3-5 sentence summary of each paper

Requirements:

  • The sources have to be primary.  In the context of scientific literature, a primary source is a study. To determine whether a source is a study, look for a section titled Methods (sometimes this section is titled Materials & Methods).
  • The sources have to be peer reviewed.  Peer review, also known as refereeing, is a process that  involves the examination of a paper or book by several experts in the writer's discipline, prior to publication. These experts are the writer's peers. Peer reviewed papers and articles are thought to be of higher quality.
  • The list of citations followed by a descriptive summary is known as an annotated bibliography

Finding Sources

  • When searching the resources below, connect your terms (keywords) with AND. Example: triclocarban AND Staphylococcus aureus
  • If an article you would like to have is not available through the library's databases, you may request it by filling out the Interlibrary Loan Request form.
  • Once you have your sources, visit the library's annotated bibliography guide to learn how to create your bibliography. To format your citations, please see the library's APA Citation Style guide.
  • If you need help learning how to search the databases or how to cite your sources, contact your liaison librarian at the contact email that was given to you during your library session.
