What is GenAI?

  • robot wearing a headsetUnlike traditional AI (also known as narrow AI or weak AI), GenAI is a form of artificial intelligence that can create something new. GenAI generates new content from inputs it receives from the user.
  • There are many examples of genAI tools. Here are some:
  • GenAI can create text, images, audio, video, and computer code.
  • GenAI is trained on large datasets. Large Language Models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT* use these datasets and deep learning methods to learn and produce natural language. These models can understand the meaning and context of words and sentences, which makes them perform well at tasks such as creating text, translating languages and summarizing content.
  • LLMs work by predicting the next word in a sequence. For example, if presented with "I'd like a peanut butter and ----" they will complete the sentence by adding "jelly sandwich."
  • Tools that generate images, video, or code, are similarly trained.

In short:

  • GenAI generates new content.
  • The content is generated from prompts provided by the user.
  • GenAI can generate text, images, and computer code.
  • GenAI tools are "trained" using massive amounts of data

*Generative Pre-Trained Transformers, commonly known as GPT, are a family of neural network models that uses the transformer architecture and is a key advancement in artificial intelligence (AI) powering generative AI applications such as ChatGPT. GPT models give applications the ability to create human-like text and content (images, music, and more), and answer questions in a conversational manner. Organizations across industries are using GPT models and generative AI for Q&A bots, text summarization, content generation, and search. (source: Amazon Web Services)
