The different types of sources

Information can come from virtually anywhere: a newspaper article, a documentary, a sign, a book, a person, a blog, etc. These are all known as sources of information.

These sources can be categorized in many ways, such as:

  • By format
    • physical,  digital, book, article, website, video, DVD, etc.
  • By purpose and intended audience
    • scholarly, popular
  • By type of information content
    • primary, secondary, tertiary

This playbook will discuss primary, secondary, and tertiary sources. We identify these sources based on the type of information they contain.
