Citation Styles Playbook

ASA Style is a set of citation rules created by the American Sociological Association. This style is primarily used in sociology publications. The instructions in this guide are based on the ASA Quick Tips for ASA Style Guide and the American Sociological Association Style Guide (5th edition, 2014).

Keep these formatting guidelines in mind when writing citations in ASA style:

• The citation list is called References.
• Entries should be listed in alphabetical order by author's last name.
• Entires should be double-spaced.
• The first line of an entry is set against the left margin. Subsequent lines are indented using the hanging indent format.
• In the References list, always include the name of each author in a multi-author work. Do not use the abbreviation "et al." within References list entries.
