ASM Citation Style for Print Articles:
Journal article

Author's last name Author's first initial(s). Year published. Title of article. Journal abbreviation Volume number(Issue number):page numbers.

(Note: Journal titles should be abbreviated using the standard abbreviation used in the National Library of Medicine PubMed Journals Database, for example, Journal of Bacteriology is abbreviated as "J Bacteriol" See:

Caserta E, Haemig HAH, Manias DA, Tomsic J, Grundy FJ, Henkin TM, Dunny GM. 2012. In vivo and in vitro analyses of regulation of the pheromone-responsive prgQ promoter by the PrgX pheromone receptor protein. J Bacteriol 194:3386-3394.

(Note: Some journal titles are not abbreviated. Remember to check the NLM Catalog:

Author's last name Author's first initial(s). Article title (optional). Journal title abbreviation, in press.

(Note: Article title is optional; Journal title is mandatory.)

Journal Abbreviation Instructions

To identify the correct journal abbreviation for your citation, go to the PubMed Journals Database, found on the National Library of Medicine's Web site.


1. Type the title of the journal into the NLM Catalog, and press Search.

2. Find the correct entry for the journal you are looking for. Be careful as some journal titles are very similar.

3. Find the correct journal abbreviation listed next to "NLM Title Abbreviation." This is the form you should use for your ASM style citation.

Example citation for a journal article from Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy:

Falagas ME, Kasiakou SK. 2006. Use of international units when dosing colistin will help decrease confusion related to various formulations of the drug around the world. Antimicrob Agents Chemother 50:2274-2275.
